Halland is a historic and geographic gem. From the flat beaches and expansive golf courses and rolling farmlands around Halmstad you quickly are embraced by the seemingly endless quiet forests dotted with iconic Swedish ‘Torps’ – small Swedish farmsteads carved out of the wilderness. The forests you cycle through are dotted with old-growth forests hidden along the historic demilitarized zone between the Danish coastland and the Swedish forests. Enjoy a night feasting at a deer lodge that seems out of a Tolkienesque-fantasy world. Stop at a spa tucked into the rolling lowlands dotted with Viking tombs dating back to the Bronze Age. Finally, enjoy the rolling highlands and rugged sea coast of the Bjäre peninsula, while enjoying fresh local seafood keep your eyes open for Viking stone ship graves hidden amongst the farm fields.

Day 1 – Halmstad History
Begins in the coastal city of Halmstad where you have the day to explore the 16th century cathedral, the historic Danish castle, or the many riverside cafes and parks. Famous for its 40 km of sandy beaches and numerous golf courses, Halmstad is a perfect city to extend your stay and relax in. Halmstad is easily accessible as a 2 hour train ride from the easy-to-navigate Copenhagen airport, or Gothenburg, as well as accessible by ferry from Aarhus, Denmark or by the E6 highway from Malmö or Gothenburg.
Rental bikes will be fitted in the afternoon. The group meets with the tour operator in the rooftop restaurant to discuss logistics of the trip in the evening. It’s a chance to get to know each other before launching into the Swedish countryside.

Day 2 Halmstad – Femsjö
Distance 38 km Elevation 250 hm. Beginning after a healthy breakfast you follow the picturesque Bolmunbana, a historic train line that was converted to a paved cycling path in the 1960’s. This quiet path follows the scenic Fylleån river towards the village of Simlångsdalen.
Coming out of the forest for lunch at the renowned country pub/hotel of Tallhöjden. After lunch you continue out into the backcountry on quiet roads alongside the former rail-line, the now gravel Bolmenbana to our destination, a small country hotel next to the tiny village of Femsjö (Five Lakes). There is a historic walk through the village and an abandoned village site. This area was famous for battles and raids during the long Swedish-Danish border wars.

Day 3 Femsjö – Ulvered
Distance 35 km Elevation 300 hm
After a quiet breakfast walk with a hot coffee, a morning mist and the hopes of moose munching in a pond, you will cycle back through Simlångsdalen village. Then you will be in the real wilderness today as you pass the occasional red and white Swedish ‘torp’ or farmstead on a the odd herd of cattle or sheep. This region has a low population density of humans, but plenty of deer, moose and wild boar. Keep your camera at the ready! There is nothing for miles but trees, lakes and hidden wildlife.
As your day goes on you will arrive out of the wilderness to a hunting lodge-styled restaurant, cabins and a huge deer farm. Here you can learn about the local wildlife while enjoying fresh wild game, and even practice your fishing skills in the evening at their stocked ponds.

Day 4 – Ulvered – Laholm
Distance 30 km Elevation 125 hm After pulling yourself away from walking amongst the deer as the morning fog lifts, you eat a hearty breakfast and head off on day six of the trip. Today brings you a mix of wild forests and open farmland of the Lagan valley. Your morning forest cycle-meditation is broken by the sounds of your stomach grumbling as you break out of the forests into the scenic rolling farmlands.
You will cycle to the historic town of Laholm, and today’s lunch spot. A world-famous bakery and cycle cafe in the charming town center perched over the river Lagan. From Laholm you ride a mix of quiet farm roads a short distance to your luxury spa destination.

Day 5 – Laholm – Bjäre Peninsula
Distance 28 km Elevation 180 hm Tearing yourself away from the sauna and spa, you will head a short distance to the beautiful sandy coastline before cycling into the town of Båstad for lunch. Here you will find a lovely harbour and small historic town center with an almost infinite selection of restaurants ringing the harbour. Båstad is a famous tennis town, watch out for flying balls!
From Båstad you will climb up to the Hallandsåsen, the highlands that have been threatening since Laholm. This ancient glacial deposit marks the border between Halland and Skåne (Scania). There is a big jump in dialect, almost as much as between English and Scottish. You will end your day at the wonderful Hovshallar, the tip of the Bjäre peninsula. Enjoy an evening cliffside walk, remember, the sun doesn’t go down until late.

Day 6 – Bjäre Peninsula – Båstad
Distance 32 km Elevation 190 hm Watching the waves break over the stoney cliffs gives you a feel for the day. Today is a coastal loop with lunch in the historic fishing village of Torekov. Be ready to practice your Danish, as this area is known as the ‘Danish Alps’ to locals. You are close to the ferry to Helsingör, home of Hamlet’s castle, and all the Danes coming up from Copenhagen on their bikes. Denmark’s landscape can’t boast hills like this, so many Danes come to this region for hiking and cycling.
The coastal route will be a huge change from the close hugging forests of previous days. Wide vistas and Bronze age tombs litter the landscape as you cycle past ice cream wagons and fresh veggie stands. The day ends in Båstad, where you can extend your stay for another night or head off on the train after meeting the tour operator and saying a fond farewell to your trusty steeds.
